My favourite of the famous serial killers, Jeffrey Dahmer had a certain type of eerie grace about him that I cannot help but admire.
Towards the end of his existence he spoke very eloquently about his compulsions and even in jail he admitted that they did not leave him, and probably would not leave him until the day he died. He did not have an explanation for them, he could not pinpoint a reason why; he just knew what he wanted. And in case anyone doesn't know about what Dahmer wanted, it was to have complete and total control over another human being without considering their needs whatsoever.(I would like to point out that I do feel somewhat awkward writing about Dahmer since it seems somewhat against his wishes. In his Final Will and Testament, he specified that he wanted to be cremated and have his ashes spread in no particular or specific location. He said he didn't want to be buried, he didn't want a grave or any sort of plaque of rememberance- he basically wanted to vanish from the face of this earth. )
And I suppose if you think about it, if you're painfully lonely and desperately seeking the company of another person, what better way to go about it than to drug them, drill several holes into their brain and inject it with hydrochloric acid? Because if that ain't gonna keep them around, then surely nothing will. At least, however, when they actually DO die you don't have to worry about them eventually leaving you. Really the only rational thing left to do in those situations is to amputate and decapitate the body, make furniture out of the skull and bones - all the while eating organs ranging from thigh to penis. Let us of course not forget storing the body parts next to your food and beer in the fridge, or allowing decomposing bodies to rot beside you in bed or in the bathroom.
What really fascinates me the most about Dahmer, isn't actually the gorey stuff - I'm more interested in the fact that he managed to kill 17 men without getting caught. He lived a seemingly normal life everyday and he even said so himself that had he not gotten "so sloppy" due to overuse of alcohol he probably never would have been caught. I find it incredibly interesting to listen to him describe his actions, all the while acknowledging that what he did was horrendous, but that his compulsions were simply too strong. It's also interesting to note that he had been brought to the attention of the police quite a few times during his murder years and always managed to talk himself out of the situation.
On this day, 18 years ago, Dahmer was murdered by a fellow inmate who had mistaken Dahmer for a racist since a majority of the men he killed were of African-American descent. The saddest part about this was how Dahmer's parent's who loved and supported him to the very end both publicly announced that they felt they were "not allowed" to mourn the passing of their son due to the crimes he had committed. His own mother made a statement to the public along the lines of, "There. Are you happy? He had his head bludgeoned and he is dead. Is that what you wanted?"
No. I don't think so. I think we lost a valuable resource into the human psyche the day Dahmer died. He was an intelligent person who appeared to be willing to talk about himself and his actions in order help gain insight into the mind of someone like him. Governments murder and destroy lives on a far grander scale but they are certainly not willing to discuss the finer details or provide you with absolute honesty - Jeffrey Dahmer did.
